8 Ways to Build Creative Confidence in Therapy
Sometimes it can be challenging—or even downright intimidating—to learn a new talent or skill or further develop one you already know you have, especially when it comes to therapy. It can include allowing more people to see you in this light, which can bring stress, anxiety and an uncomfortable level of vulnerability. Allowing yourself to step into something new such as therapy or progress to a new degree of mastery in a goal, provides you an opportunity to tap into your creativity and authenticity, which ultimately increases your creative confidence.
8 Tips for Increasing Confidence in Therapy
1) Determine your beginning skill level in whatever you want to learn. Do you want to learn how to have better communication? Better relationships? Boundaries?
2) Start with the most basic steps for your skill level. This could be just a phone call or googling a therapist to get a feel for what they offer.
3) Find or create a project or develop a concrete goal where you want to develop new skills or strengths. Then set time aside each day/week to work on your project/goal such as journaling, meditating/praying, drinking more water, etc..
4) Simplify your life to free up your mind and creative powers. (i.e. put in boundaries and carve out some time for yourself).
5) Approach everything as though it is the first time you’ve seen, learned or experienced it to ensure your ego isn’t causing you to miss anything.
6) Continue learning—always. It’s a journey, not a destination.
7) Read and study subject and resources that are mind-expanding.
8) Never assume you’ve “learned it all” of any subject, topic or skill.
Learning and increasing our skills in therapy can be a source of great accomplishment, satisfaction and fulfillment. The more often we practice exercising new tools and skills learned in a proactive way, the more confident we become in progressing beyond our current abilities, which can have a positive impact across our lives in everything we attempt and pursue.
