5 Tips for Creating Healthy Boundaries
There are many ways to identify and set boundaries but these 5 tips for creating healthy boundaries is a start in the right direction. Boundaries are what allow us to bring our most authentic self to a relationship, which, in turn, impacts the quality of the relationship and our overall happiness within it. Many times, the difference between being in an enjoyable relationship that lifts us up and a relationship that leaves much to be desired is creating, establishing and honoring a good set of boundaries. But, exactly how does a person set up healthy boundaries?
Creating Healthy Boundaries: A Start
1) Be clear about what you want and what you need. Remember that other people are not mind readers and it is up to you to make your wants and needs known.
2) Be aware of, respect and honor the boundaries of others.
3) Make friends with and practice saying “no” to requests that are made of you, that you don’t want to do or you feel are not in your best interest.
4) Trust yourself. While it is fine to seek the advice and counsel of others whom you trust and respect, you are ultimately the best person to be making decisions about your life.
5) Respect your personal values. If you feel pressured to relax or altogether dishonor your values, stick to your guns and remain committed to what you know is right for your life.
Setting up a good set of boundaries is not only ideal for your own well-being, but it helps set up the relationship to win, both for you and for the other person or people within that relationship.
