7 Ways to Feel Happy Alone
Let’s face it: there is a tremendous difference in being “alone” and being “lonely.” Being alone implies solely that nobody else is around, while a feeling of loneliness carries with it discomfort, sadness, shame, unhappiness, and a variety of other feelings. So, is it possible to be alone without it having to be an unpleasant, lonely experience? The answer is a resounding “yes!”
7 Keys to Feeling Great When You’re Alone
1) Sole control over the TV remote. (Can you say binge watch!).
2) Being able to fully express yourself in your environment without having to consider what someone else might say or how they will possibly react or judge. (Dance like crazy around the kitchen).
3) Getting to be “just you.” (or take time to find you!).
4) No need to seek or receive anyone else’s approval for choices you make for your life. The only mirror you need is a spiritual one!
5) Freedom to invite anyone you choose to just come hang out.
6) Knowing your time is your own and having complete control (at least to a major extent) over your schedule.
7) Liberty to learn anything you want to spend time learning without having to work around anyone else’s schedule. (Read a book, journal, meditate/pray).
While being with others, whether friends, loved ones or inside of a romantic relationship, can provide us with powerful connections and an experience of being loved, cared for, and accepted, it’s entirely possible to also experience these same feelings when we are by ourselves. It doesn’t have to be that one is better than the other; we can have both—and both can bring us great happiness, joy, and satisfaction!
