We often hear about being our authentic selves. But, exactly how does a person go about finding out who they authentically are? Check out the tips below!
Discovering Your Authentic Self: Take action!
1) Study your own history to help you determine the experiences you’ve had that shape who you are today. Make a timeline of your life and note any major life changes, traumas, wins, etc. in order to see yourself clearly.
2) Think beyond the superficial. Delving deeper in your thinking can support you in tapping into undiscovered layers below your surface. Answer these questions: What makes you feel alive? Joy? Sad? Angry? If you get into thinking of others and their faults, ask yourself if you have any of those negative traits yourself. Then change your thinking.
3) Set goals that are truly important to you, rather than working towards goals that others want for you. Think about what you truly like to do, how do you spend your time v.s. how do you want to spend your time? What is one thing you can do to start working towards your goals?
4) Get into action. Take advantage of the newfound excitement and motivation that generally accompanies discovering your authentic self. Think of the first step in all of the above; write one sentence on the timeline, note your strengths. Think of congruent actions you can take to feel more authentically who you are rather than what you were told you were or who society dictates you should be.
When you discover your own authentic self and/or truth, you have the opportunity to live life in new and exciting ways, pursuing things that really make you happy and confident. When you are living authentically, not only are you happier and more relaxed, it also can have a positive impact on others around you and for whom you’re responsible.
